Big Bro Beetle’s Adventure

This project used to be known as Beetle of the Knights; It is a 3rd Person VR Adventure with simple ‘Bump-Combat’.

Story

You’re a big bro beetle and you were on a walk with your younger bro when all of a sudden a big bully bullfrog plops in and kidnaps your younger bro as a snack for later. Upon awakening you find an old beetle that points you in the direction the bullfrog went with your bro. Far off to the Stinky Swamp. He lends you an old wooden sword. Not much, but it’s better than nothing. Time to do big bro stuff and save your ‘lil bro.

Influences

Zelda 1 comes immediately to mind for most of this game’s decisions from its open-ish world exploration to the dungeon setup, but I also love the Ys series for it combat and exploration. One other big influence is Moss. I played it and wanted to make something similar but more open-world, rather than a linear level/puzzle type format.

Features

  • A multi-level world stitched together to form a seemingly big world to explore and fight baddies in.
  • Classic ‘bump-combat’. Nothing fancy here, just make sure to stay out of harms way and attack enemies when you see the chance. Try not to touch anything dangerous-looking.
  • An upgrade-able sword with the help of some ORE and a friendly FIREFLY SMITH.
  • Hidden secrets like passageways to other areas.
  • A dungeon for each biome with clues to find where your lil’ bro is.

Mission goal

This project is a challenge to myself to get a game released under my name. I’m probably going to continue making games into my elder years but this one’s the first one under whatever studio name I pick. Something I struggle with is getting game prototypes into finished states so this is me trying to break that habit.

Release Date

I am planning on having a release in Spring 2024. I believe I can get there as long as I stay lean and mean with content. As an artist first, I always feel the pull to embellish assets or add too much fluff. While important this is an exercise on making a complete shippable product that I can feel proud of as a game dev.

Where to get?

You can get it here at itch.io! I would appreciate if you left any feedback if you do play it!
